Peering out over an 800 to 1,500 piece goose decoy spread is an amazing sight, but not nearly as spectacular as what is about to unfold! Ducks buzz the deck in the pre-dawn light as small groups surround you. Hunters put on white parkas and disappear into the spread to the sounds of thousands of geese waking up on nearby roosts. Your group is now firmly placed in the middle of a grain field where the geese were scouted feeding on the evening before. This morning they will return! To our seasonal lease members and their guest alike, this is a very traditional style goose hunt that will have you caught up in the spirit of the hunt from the moment you arrive.
Riceland Waterfowl Club’s seasonal lease members that goose hunt have an advantage over other club members. Most hunting groups are duck hunters. This provides more open land to hunt the specklebelly geese along with the abundant snow geese that winter here in Texas. Seasonal members will find we hold tens of thousands of geese and numerous ducks on our roost ponds. Having a roost next to your goose decoy spread really helps. Especially on those foggy mornings as a group of geese pick up off the roost, you can hear them honking in the distance, but can’t see them through the thick fog. The sounds of snow geese are getting closer as they search for the goose calling to them, your goose call. You catch a glimpse of a lone specklebelly goose appearing out and back into the fog overhead without even a sound. The snow geese are getting closer, you can’t see them but you know they're almost in shotgun range. Suddenly they appear out of the fog, hundreds of geese, wings setting over the goose decoys, and not one goose even knows you're there! When the hunting day is over, and all the goose decoys picked up, you remember why you are a goose hunter!
