Early season teal hunts are a great chance to test your shooting skills at one of the most acrobatic of all ducks. A single teal slips in low and unnoticed, or a group of 30 or more appear out of nowhere! Lots of ducks and plenty of shooting, it’s easy to get hooked on waterfowl hunting after one of these fast paced hunts. For this early teal season is a hunt where the duck limits are more the norm than not. This is one of the more favord hunts among our seasonal club members and youth alike. From flooded rice fields to flooded flats, RiceLand Waterfowl Club adds water early to help not only hold the thousands of blue wing teal, but also all the other waterfowl that migrate early with them.
The approach of September brings with it cooler weather here in Texas. As the north winds blows, the blue wing teal ride these wind currents southwards to their wintering grounds. Before flights of teal arrive, water holes have been pumped and duck blinds have been erected waiting on their soon return. When the teal migrate they hold up for a while feeding on the fresh cut rice fields. Shortly after their arrival will be the start of a brand new and exciting waterfowl season for our lease members. By this time their guns and duck decoys have been checked; and now they’re ready. Our members have been anxiously awaiting this morning- opening, the start of teal season! Early before daylight the lease members are busy setting out the last of the decoys, as a small group of teal are seen winging just out of reach. Afterwards in the duck blind with guns loaded, a large flock of blue wing teal are spotted. The dog watches steadily as the teal make their final approach closing in on the decoys. They're cupped up - feet out - hovering over the decoys, “NOW!”
